Kentucky Farmers' Markets

Lexington Farmers' Market

Lexington Farmers' Market

The Lexington Farmers' Market in Lexington, Kentucky, is a vibrant, year-round market that showcases the best of local agriculture and artisanal goods. It operates in multiple locations across the city, with its primary downtown hub at Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park (often referred to as the Fifth Third Pavilion) near the Historic Lexington Courthouse. This downtown market runs every Saturday, offering a bustling atmosphere from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the peak season (April through October) and scaling back to 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the winter months (November through March). In January and February 2025, the market will temporarily move indoors to the Greyline Station atrium on North Limestone to escape the cold, returning to Tandy Park after St. Patrick’s Day.

Beyond the Saturday market, it extends to other days and locations seasonally: Sundays on Southland Drive (April to October, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Tuesdays and Thursdays at the corner of Maxwell and Broadway (mid-May to mid-November, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until sold out), and Wednesdays in Gardenside on Alexandria Drive (June to September, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.). This multi-day, multi-site setup makes it highly accessible to residents throughout the week.

The market features over 50 vendors during peak months, representing more than 30 Central Kentucky counties. Shoppers can expect a wide variety of fresh, locally grown produce like fruits, vegetables, and herbs, alongside meats, eggs, baked goods, flowers, jams, honey, and even ready-to-eat foods from food trucks. Some vendors offer unique items like fresh pasta, artisanal cheeses, or organic chickens, reflecting diverse growing and production methods. While primarily Kentucky-focused, the market allows limited out-of-state sourcing (e.g., Georgia peaches), complementing local offerings like kale or garlic. It’s a cooperative owned by its vendors since its formal incorporation in 1975, emphasizing community and direct farmer-to-consumer connections.

The atmosphere is lively, often enhanced by live music and a social vibe—vendors like Blue Moon Farm (known for garlic) and Elmwood Stock Farm (a staple for organic produce and CSA baskets) have loyal followings. Winter markets remain festive, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas, with goods like storage crops (sweet potatoes, turnips), meat, and baked treats. Accessibility is a priority, with flat, paved terrain, free parking options (on-street and nearby garages), and staff assistance available for those needing help. The market also accepts SNAP-EBT, doubling dollars up to $20 to ensure broader access to fresh food. It’s a cornerstone of Lexington’s local food scene, blending tradition, quality, and community spirit.
